Nail trims at home: a calm routine for wiggly puppies

Start early, go slowly and trim one nail at a time if you must. The goal in the first few months is confidence, not a perfect finish.

Puppies who learn that nail trims are boring grow into adults who sleep through them. Puppies who learn that nail trims are a wrestling match grow into adults who need two people and a muzzle. The difference is almost entirely decided in the first six months.

Week one: no clippers at all

Begin by simply holding each paw for a few seconds while your puppy is calm, then letting go and rewarding. Squeeze the toes gently so the nail extends. Tap each nail with a fingernail. Let the clippers sit on the floor during play so they become furniture. None of this trims a single nail, and all of it matters.

Reading the nail

On light nails the quick shows as a pink triangle; stop a couple of millimetres before it. On dark nails, trim a sliver at a time and look at the cut face. A chalky white centre means keep going; a dark dot in the middle means stop. If you are unsure, take less. A nail trimmed too short bleeds, stings and sets training back by weeks.

The routine that works

  • Pick a spot and time you can repeat, like the kitchen floor after dinner

  • Trim one or two nails, reward, and stop while things are still going well

  • Come back tomorrow for the next few; by the end of the week all four paws are done

  • Keep styptic powder nearby so a small mistake stays a small problem

Walks help, but only on pavement

Regular walks on concrete file the front nails naturally, which is why many dogs only need their back and dew claws trimmed between grooms. Grass, carpet and trails do nothing. If you can hear clicking on the kitchen floor, the nails are long enough to be changing how your puppy stands.

Every groom at Pawlish includes a nail trim and file, and we are happy to show you our hold on your own puppy so the routine at home matches ours.
