Getting a nervous dog ready for their first groom

A calm first visit sets the tone for every groom after it. A little homework in the week before makes a bigger difference than anything we can do on the day.

A groomer combing a small terrier

A first groom is a lot of new things at once: a strange room, running water, a dryer that sounds like a hairdryer with ambition, and a person touching paws that have never been touched for that long. Dogs do not need to love it. They need to learn that it ends, that nothing bad happens, and that there are treats at the end.

The week before

Spend a few minutes each evening handling the places a groomer handles. Hold each paw for a count of five, lift the ears, run your fingers along the belly and tail, and reward every time. If you own clippers, switch them on in the same room while your dog eats dinner so the sound becomes background noise. Short car rides that end somewhere pleasant help too if the salon trip itself is the stressful part.

What to bring

  • A worn t-shirt or small towel that smells like home

  • A handful of high-value treats we can use during the dry

  • A note about anything that frightened them before, like dryers or being lifted

On the day

Skip the long walk right before the appointment. A tired dog sounds like a good idea, but a dog who has just been through a lot of stimulation has less patience left for a bath. A normal morning, a short sniff outside the door and a calm hand-over work better. Try not to narrate your own nerves at the counter. Dogs read tone faster than we think.

What we do differently for a first visit

First grooms at Pawlish are booked with extra time and no cage drying. We start with the easiest step for that dog, break the groom into short pieces, and stop before frustration sets in, even if that means the finish is not perfect. A slightly uneven first trim is a fair price for a dog who walks in happily the second time.

If you know your dog is very anxious, mention it when you book. We can schedule a quiet slot and even do a ten-minute meet-and-greet beforehand at no charge.
